The maroon army athletes show their sport spirit on the ‘front lines’
Hoërskool Generaal Hertzog’s 2023 Inter-house Athletics Day was a blast, like a general’s canon.
In the army, there is no question that soldiers must be in fit and proper shape.
The athletes of Hoërskool Generaal Hertzog certainly proved to be fit and proper athletic soldiers on January 13, when the school hosted its annual Inter-house Athletics Day.

On the ‘home-base’ territory, the action could be seen across the field: Javelins, discus plates, and shot put balls were flying like missiles, with cheers of support from their peer ‘soldiers’.

The school’s hashtag ‘#OurBloodIsMaroon’ was proudly displayed as the athletes gave it their all on the warm and blazing day.
The ‘generals’ took to the field and made outstanding achievements, among others:

Pierre Pansegrouw achieved the title of Best Junior Boy on the field and participated in the u.15 shot put of the day.
Phetizwe Shabangu kept women’s power high with the title of Best Junior Girl on the track and participated in the girls’ u.15 90m hurdles.

Sokwazi Sikosana achieved the title of Best Senior Boy on the track for the day and participated in the boys’ u.16 110m hurdles.
The top title for the Best Athlete of the Day was proudly achieved by Brandon Joubert, who participated in the boys’ u.17 1 500m, 800m and 400m track.
Of course, none of it could have been possible without the school’s organisation, and teachers are immensely proud of their sporty ‘recruits’.
The general’s sporty cannon went off with a blast and ended with a successful day.
