Young Siyabonga Matjeka (11) is technically in charge of running Vuma Combined School.

The Grade 7 learner blows the whistle during the change of periods; this all becomes the norm at the school thanks to load-shedding.

The school has to be innovative as the school siren does not work during load-shedding.

“My teacher always tells me the time when its time for change of period after we start the school. I love what I’m doing because it shows that the school has confidence in me and I have to go out and blow the whistle every time during the change of period. This has been going on for some time and the learners are now used to it. The school is literally by me, because even the teachers have to follow my instructions every time they hear the sound of the whistle,” Siyabonga said.

Siyabonga says load-shedding have a lot of negative implications and people need to change their lifestyles.

“I want to be a policeman when I grow up because police protect people and they keep law and order,” concluded Siyabonga.
