Parents and the Emalahleni Local Municipality collaborate to help Khonzimfundo

Clean toilets and clean water for Khonzimfundo Primary School students

Academics have resumed at Khonzimfundo Primary School following an alleged lack of proper sanitation facilities at the school, which caused considerable frustration among parents as teaching and learning had been disrupted for the past several days.

“Yes, the children have returned to school,” said Mr Sunday Motha, chairperson of the School Governing Body (SGB).

This comes after parents and the Emalahleni Community Organisation (ECO) took the issue of the school’s lack of water and working toilets into their own hands on Thursday, January 19.

Parents and the Emalahleni Local Municipality worked together to help Khonzimfundo.

“We took the initiative as parents and the Emalahleni Local Municipality to repair and clean the blocked toilets,” said Motha.

Also, a Good Samaritan came to the rescue of the school, which had been suffering from a severe water shortage for years, leaving students and staff without access to clean water.

“The principal’s husband helped us with the water problem by obtaining a pipe, which we connected so that the school has running water,” said Motha.

On Monday, January 30, teachers and students returned to school with clean toilets and access to clean water, and parents were relieved.

“We would like to thank everyone who helped us in our difficult situation,” Motha concluded.
