Hospital is still open – Nehawu regional secretary emphasised that the strike is not a health strike, but a public service strike

Nehawu Regional secretary Sydney Mahlaba said they are very disappointed by the 3% wage increase.

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) strike has seemingly stopped.

As it stands Witbank Provincial Hospital is open today (March 13) and roads are open for motorists to use.

This comes after reports this morning the hospital is currently closed and barricaded with burning tyres. It is also alleged that an ambulance and people seeking medical attention were prevented from the hospital entrance this morning.

On Friday, March 10 public services workers consisting of doctors, nurses, Home Affairs and Sassa employees took were protesting demanding a 10% wage increase. Regional secretary for Nehawu, Sydney Mahlaba emphasised that the trike is not a health strike, but a public service strike that is driven by the negligence of the employer by implementing a 3% wage increase instead of 10%.
