Gunshots heard in Jackaroo Park last night left residents in fear.

The gunshots heard came from a shootout between heavily armed male suspects and members of Witbank Police.

One of the suspects was shot dead by Witbank Police members during the shootout.

According to reports, the death follows after police members received information yesterday (March 14), of a group of heavily armed men travelling from Nelspruit to Gauteng.

Members from Witbank SAPS National Organised Crime Unit and Middelburg District Visible Policing Unit set up a mini roadblock on the old Middelburg road.

At about 20:00, the heavily armed suspects entered eMalahleni via the old Middelburg road with three vehicles.

Members of the Police tried to stop the suspects, but they managed to drive through the police barricade and opened fire at the police.

The police members returned fire and chased after the three vehicles.

The police managed to stop two vehicles a white Mercedes SUV and a grey Mercedes Benz on Voortrekker Street. A third vehicle, a white Volkswagen Polo, managed to escape.

One suspect was shot dead, and one R5 rifle with several rounds of ammunition was recovered from the scene.

The group of suspects are possibly involved in cash-in-transit robberies in South Africa.

Investigations are continuing, and more arrests are expected.
