Businessman arrested after alleged assault on domestic worker

The domestic worker sustained injuries during the alleged assault on Sunday.

Police arrested a businessman after an alleged assault on his domestic worker over the weekend.

The stitches on Ms Maria Mahlangu’s head and the cast on her hand tell a story of the horrific ordeal she went through when the man she worked for allegedly assaulted her on Sunday, April 2.

Mahlangu told WITBANK NEWS the man said he could not pay her for the day’s work and allegedly told her to take anything she wants as payment.

“I took a bottle of perfume. That is when the man threw the content of my handbag out and started beating me.”

A neighbour alerted the neighbourhood watch after Mahlangu’s screams for help were heard.

The man allegedly started yielding knives around and slashed open a neighbourhood responder’s arm with a knife after the responder tried to stop him.

He was eventually stopped when he was shot with rubber bullets.

Police took the man to hospital and arrested him officially on Wednesday.

He is expected to appear before Witbank Magistrate’s Court today (April 6).
