Women’s club came together to boost township economy
The launching of the programme was held at the Extension 11 Community Hall on Friday, March 31.
A group of women came together to form a club to fight poverty.
The women call themselves Sonqoba Simunye Women’s Group, (Will Succeed United).
When the club was started, it had the blessing of the Emalahleni Council Chief Whip, Clr Petunia Maseko.
The launching of the programme was held at the Extension 11 Community Hall on Friday, March 31.
According to Mr Robert Mugalula the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Community Development Foundation Agency (CDFA) the process started when 40 women per ward were recruited and the number totalled 370 in all the wards. The group also has managers in each ward.
“This is a community-driven programme managed by CDFA and the women were offered training in basic entrepreneurship skills and business set-up. Training was offered by Interlink which put together three companies to make the programme a success. The programme is linked to all the township tuck shops which will be supplied with certain products, like cool drinks, eggs, water and other products. The programme will result in the process of creating, developing and managing the new business venture to generate profits,” said Mugalula.
Managing director Ms Tiny Mabena added to say that the programme will help a lot of women to stand on their own and fight poverty while at the same time being skilled in business.
The group will negotiate with supplies for products and they will then provide tuck shops with products to be delivered to their shops.
Mr Mugalula thinks the programme will succeed and makes a lot of difference in the lives of the women.
He thanked Clr Maseko, and council speaker Clr Mduduzi Nkosi for their support and for believing in the programme.
Chief Executive Director of Interlink Group, Mr Ambrose Bruce Oketta said his institution offered training to the women and he is hopeful that with the skills they acquire, they will succeed.
He said skills development is key to developing oneself.
The women were presented with certificates.
