Melokuhle Albinism Foundation needs assistance with good sunscreen

The Melokuhle Albinism Foundation requires assistance with getting better sunscreen creams for their skin.

A local albinism foundation is appealing to the public and organisations to help people with albinism.

The Melokuhle Albinism Foundation is an organisation that has made a significant difference in the lives of people who have albinism and hopes to continue doing so for many years to come.

Albinism is a hereditary disorder that affects melanin production, which is responsible for skin, hair, and eye colour. Albino people have little or no melanin, giving them minimal protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

They are asking for a helping hand in providing better-quality sunscreen cream that is suitable for the sensitive skin of people living with albinism, as they mentioned that clinics do provide sunscreen creams, but the supply is not ideal for their skin since it causes it to become dry.

The foundation caters for above 50 people living with albinism.

Tryphina Nhlapho, the foundation’s founder who has albinism, stated that the few people with albinism who can afford it acquire their sunscreen from retail stores, which is rather expensive.

Clinics, on the other hand, offer sunscreens, but the goods are unsuitable since they cause their skin to become dry and flaky.

They are also calling on the government to provide funding for research into the development of safe and effective sunscreen products for people with albinism.

“We need a sunscreen cream with a high SPF of 50+ that can also moisturise the skin and is water-resistant. Try to stay in the shade as much as possible. Cover up with clothing with SPF protection. Always wear a hat, especially when walking in the sun. Always check your skin for changes or suspicious marks,” Tryphina said.

If you would like to make donations to the foundation, you can contact Tryphina at 082 796 1582.
