Municipality removes illegal connections in Empumelelweni

The illegal connection operation follows the recent service delivery protests where Vosman and surrounding areas were left without electricity for almost three weeks.

Emalahleni Local Municipality has kept its promise following the newly formed operation to remove illegal connections in KwaGuqa, Ezunambeni and Empumelelweni.

The illegal connection operation follows the recent service delivery protests where Vosman and surrounding areas were left without electricity for almost three weeks.

During the restoration of the power supply, the municipality emphasised to the community that the new transformer must be treated delicately and responsibly.

Residents were urged to avoid overloading the transformer with illegal connections and to apply power-saving measures.

The municipality conveyed the negative impact illegal connections have on the power supply to the KwaGuqa new extensions. This has resulted in the overloaded system, thus the continuous tripping of the grid hence residents have been experiencing power outages.

In a statement shared on social media, the municipality urged community members to report illegal connections and for residents to report individuals who are responsible for the illegal connections in their respective communities.

“We would like to emphasise that this is a collaborative effort between the municipality and the community to ensure that we protect the infrastructure of the municipality,” the statement read.

On Monday, May 29 the municipality issued a notice regarding the power outage in KwaGuqa Extensions, Empumelelweni and KwaGuqa New Extensions. The notice assured residents that a technical team was working on resolving the power supply with the major challenge being the overloaded system, “The supply to Empumelelweni and KwaGuqa Extensions is currently running beyond its capacity and causing trip-outs to residents due to illegal connections on the system,” the notice confirmed.

On Wednesday, May 31 the municipality confirmed that the operation is ongoing as it aims to combat illegal connections and to ease the strain that highly impacts the power supply in the area.
