Children’s rights under the spotlight at Patties
Children have fundamental human rights such as dignity, freedom and security.
In light of Child Protection Month, Rata Social Work practitioners visited Hoërskool Patriot to educate the learners on their rights and responsibilities.
Mesdames Rosinah Machaka and Lovette Sibiya visited the high school on May 30 and told the learners all about their rights and their responsibilities.
Children have the right to enjoy the highest attainable standards of health responsibility to take care of themselves and not irresponsibly expose themselves to diseases such as STIs. They have the right to non-discrimination and must also practice responsibility to not discriminate against others and respect other people,” was their message.
Other rights include being protected from abuse and the responsibility to report maltreatment and speak out.
The right to education and the responsibility to study, learn and respect their educators and peers.
Children also have the right to basic care and in the same breath the responsibility to care for their environment and not be wasteful of food.
Children are encouraged to speak out against suspected abuse, either report to their trusted educator or request the school to link them with a social worker.
Mesdames Machaka and Sibiya said children are encouraged to report abuse and violation of their rights without fear of being removed from their families. The primary mandate of the social worker is to protect and preserve families.
