Mpumalanga Mambas kick off the hockey season with a day of games

The Mambas will compete at an annual national hockey tournament.

The hockey season kick-off games were underway at the Snake-Pit (The Hockey Farm indoor court) over the weekend.

Different age groups prepared for the nationals, Hockey Farm owner Tracey Flowers said she is looking forward to the tournament.

“Indoor season is here! The Mambas will compete at an annual national tournament where approximately 30 franchises from all over the country including neighbouring countries (Namibia and Zimbabwe) will participate,” said Tracey.

She went on to say that field hockey is a popular sport in South Africa and that is growing in Mpumalanga.

Tracey also said that in the Mpumalanga region, 10 000 learners play hockey in various school leagues throughout the province.

“There is another format of the game that is growing in popularity and that is indoor hockey. Indoor hockey is played on a smaller field, indoors, with six players a side. This format makes for a very exciting and fast-paced game where the players get maximum ball contact during a game,” Tracey concluded.

Games are scheduled as follows:

Prep games — First trials date – September 3, second trials date – September 9 and 10 and tournament date – December.
