Disabled awareness campaign in Vosman to empower parents with disabled children

The campaign aimed to empower parents with disabled children and help them face their challenges.

Different stakeholders held a disabled awareness campaign to bring awareness and information to the public.

The aim of the campaign held Wednesday, November 15 at Vosman is to empower parents with disabled children and to help them to face their challenges.

One of the disability facilitators said they were able to help parents by giving them information on how to access psychologists and physiotherapists, how to apply for Sassa grants and any problems with Sassa grants application.

“Parents of disabled children are faced with many challenges ranging from having transport money going to attend hospital visits, visits to psychologist and physiotherapist which take time. Sometimes the children face stigmatisation from the public and the parents are assured of the support they can get from the different government departments. Enrolling and finding schools for children with disability were some of the challenges raised. The parents were told that disabled children like any other child have rights and they need to be treated with respect, love and care. The day was also set to celebrate the children as November in South Africa marks Disability Rights Awareness Month (DRAM). We wanted also to remind the public of the importance of celebrating the month,” said Nomcebo Hlengethwa one of the facilitators.

Hlengethwa added to say they would like to thank the Department of Social Service, Department of Health and all the other stakeholders involved in making the event a success and the information they have received and hope to make good use of it.

They will also encourage members of the community to report cases of abuse especially of children who are disabled.

She said they were happy and grateful for the support they received from members of the public, ward councillor, ward committee members, members of the royal family and the clinic staff.

She mentioned that Isibindi has changed its name to Risiha and they hope to have more campaigns in the future.

The campaign was also held to highlight the issue of children’s rights and to show that children need to be supported, cared and loved.

South Africa celebrates National Disability Rights Awareness Month annually between 3 November and 3 December. December 3 is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and is also celebrated as National Disability Rights Awareness Day.

Disability Awareness Month offers an opportunity for all people to remove these barriers and improve the quality of life of people with disabilities through concrete action.

The Department of Women, Youth and People with Disabilities is responsible for driving the government’s equity, equality and empowerment agenda in terms of those living with disabilities.

The theme for this year is: ‘Consolidate and Accelerate Rights of Persons with Disabilities into the Future’.
