Huge dagga bust for eMalahleni SAPS

Dagga worth R150 000 off eMalahleni's streets

Officers who were busy patrolling in the CBD, had a sneaky suspicion something was not quite right when they came across a grey Toyota Yaris with five occupants.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 4 at 10:30.

“They instructed the driver to stop and were not expecting to allegedly find over R150 000 worth of marijuana in the vehicle,” said police spokesperson, Captain Eddie Hall.

They had seen the occupants of the vehicle acting suspiciously and instructed the driver to stop and all the occupants of the vehicle to get out. It was during their search of the vehicle that they came across eight sports bags allegedly stuffed with tightly packaged bags believed to be dagga.

Upon interviewing the suspects, the driver of the vehicle alleged that they were hitchhikers that he had picked up and that the bags belonged to them.

According to police four foreign nationals in the vehicle allegedly confirmed that the bags were theirs and that they had been transporting the dagga from Swaziland.

Two of the suspects are from Swaziland, and two are from Mozambique. All four are allegedly illegal immigrants.

They remained in custody and appeared in court on Monday, April 15 on charges of possession with the intent to distribute.

“We would like to commend the officers involved for their sharp eyes and expert intuition in arresting these men and taking these drugs off of our streets,” Hall said.

The investigation into the case is ongoing.
