Families appeal for shelter after heavy rain destroys Kamgewane homes
A night of severe weather in eMalahleni has left 10 residents without food, shelter or blankets.
Four families in Kamgewane, Ward 17, have been left homeless after heavy rainfall swept across the area on the night of August 10. The storm caused a large tree to collapse onto their houses, leaving roofs torn off and properties exposed to further damage.
According to one of the affected residents, Ishmael Phaoane, the families are in urgent need of assistance.
“This happened last night, and we haven’t received help as of yet. We’re 10 in total, and as of now we don’t have a home, food or blankets,” he said.
Several individuals sustained minor injuries. They were treated at a local hospital before being discharged.
The families remain vulnerable, with no immediate relief available. They are appealing for shelter and safe storage of their belongings to prevent additional losses.
Municipal support
Ward 17 councillor Sizwe Mathebula said a municipal team is currently at the scene, working to assist the affected families.
“In this matter, the families are going to need a lot of things,” Mathebula said, noting the scale of support required to help them recover.
