Carjackers targeting motorists for everything they have

In two recent hijackings, suspects left with cellphones, an undisclosed amount of cash, and additional possessions.

Carjackers are leaving motorists not only without their vehicles but also without their possessions.

The first motorist fall prey on Thursday, May 2, at Bethal Road at around 20:15.

According to police reports, the victim was driving when he stopped for speed humps.

Suddenly, three suspects brandishing firearms approached him.

He was ordered to move to the back seat and not look at them.

The suspects then took his cellphone and bank card.

They forced him to accompany them; driving around until they finally dropped him off at Empumelelweni after withdrawing cash from his account.

The following day, another motorist fell victim to a similar ordeal.

This time, the incident took place on Robert Street in the Central Business District.

According to a police report, the victim was paying a visit to his girlfriend and when he was about to leave, was suddenly approached by four suspects. Subsequently, the victim and his girlfriend were taken to the back seat of the vehicle and driven to a remote location, where the suspects made transfers from the victim’s banking app.

After seizing the car, the criminals left the couple stranded in the bushes.

Captain Eddie Hall of Witbank Police Station gave out some tips to avoid being hijacked: “Avoid being alone in a vehicle when travelling at night. Do not stop around hijacking spots or in any secluded area. Always be alert when driving. Avoid distractions, such as being on your phone, drinking and driving. Increase caution at intersections; always keep a look-out for people loitering around your car or for any sudden activity around your car.”
