Young man marks nine years of lifesaving blood donations

A local blood donor plans to continue saving lives for many years to come

Lindokuhle Mlangeni (27) has been donating blood consistently for nearly nine years and plans to continue his lifesaving contributions for many more.
Lindokuhle began donating blood at the age of 16, motivated by a desire to help others in need.

Over the years, his regular donations have potentially saved dozens of lives, providing critical support to hospitals and patients in the community.

“Donating blood is such a simple act, but it can make a huge difference,” Lindokuhle said.
“Knowing that my blood can help save lives gives me a sense of purpose and fulfillment that’s hard to describe.”

According to the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), each blood donation can save up to three lives as blood is separated into red blood cells, plasma, and platelets.

With Lindokuhle’s commitment to donating, he has made approximately 15 donations over the past years.

“I plan to continue donating as long as I am able,” said Lindokuhle. “It’s a small way to give back to the community and help those in critical need. I encourage everyone who can donate blood – it’s a simple, powerful way to make a real difference.”

Less than 1% of South Africans are active blood donors.

A unit of blood only lasts 42 days after donation and, for this reason, blood donors need to donate regularly. Donors can give blood as often as every eight weeks.
