Shocking finds in school search prompt call for parental involvement
Officers were shocked to find that learners were bringing in a variety of harmful goods to school, including vapes, knives, cigarettes, and even space cookies.
In a recent operation, the Witbank Police Station, in collaboration with the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and the SAPS Dog Unit, conducted a thorough search of a local school.
The results were both surprising and disappointing, uncovering a concerning array of prohibited items among learners.
During the search, officers discovered that learners were bringing in various dangerous items, including vapes, knives, cigarettes, and space cookies.
The presence of these items in the school environment has raised alarms about learner’s safety and health.
“We were deeply shocked by the extent of these discoveries,” said Sergeant David Ratau (Adopt a cop) of the Witbank Police Station. “Vapes and other substances are extremely harmful to children’s health, and finding such items in our schools is a serious concern.”
The authorities have stressed the need for increased vigilance and collaboration between schools and law enforcement.
“To effectively address these issues, parents must work hand in hand with us,” added Ratau. “We need to ensure that our children understand the risks associated with these substances and make safer choices.”
The police are calling for continued and expanded searches in local schools to combat this growing issue.
“We will be conducting more searches to prevent these dangerous items from entering our schools,” said Ratau. “Our goal is to create a safe and healthy environment for all learners.”
Parents are urged to be proactive and supportive in this effort.
“We ask parents to engage with their children about the dangers of vapes and other harmful substances,” said Ratau. “Together, we can make a significant difference in ensuring the well-being of our learners.”
In the previous WITBANK NEWS article, we interviewed Thembi Makhubo from the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drugs Department. She made a plea about the emerging trend of hubbly bubbly and vape smoking among young people, which is exacerbating the challenges of combating substance abuse.
“Well, we now have the dilemma of young people smoking hubbly and vaping freely because they are unaware of how dangerous it can be; please, parents intervene,” remarked Makhubo.
