Local hero serves 30 years in the security industry.

In a world where burnout and cynicism often accompany long-term service, Johann Buitendacht stands as a beacon of dedication and courage.

With over three decades in high-level security, this eMalahleni hero has defied the odds, accumulating a treasure trove of harrowing tales and heart-warming moments.

Inspired by his father’s military service and uncle’s police work, Johann embarked on his journey in 1994. From guarding trains to finding his true calling, he has faced unimaginable challenges 36 armed robberies, 41 home invasions, and multiple farm attacks.

Yet, he remains steadfast, driven by a heart of gold.

At 50, Johann shows no signs of slowing down. His exploits have earned him a long-service award on Mandela Day, a testament to his unwavering commitment.

But there’s more to this giant of a man than meets the eye; he’s an avid gardener and doting grandfather, finding solace in life’s simple joys.

Johann’s career is a rollercoaster ride of emotions, from the hilarious like hiding in a morgue fridge, ‘spooking’ his colleague, to the harrowing scares of surviving 65 gunshot attempts. His training and faith have been his lifelines, carrying him through the darkest moments.

One fateful night, Johann’s heroism shone brighter than ever.

During an armed house robbery, he risked everything to save a couple, taking a bullet to the knee in the process.

As the suspect’s gun malfunctioned, Johann lay still, pretending to be dead, until backup arrived. It was a moment that could have ended his story, but fate had other plans.

With a legacy built on heroism, Johann has been featured in numerous articles and celebrated for his selflessness and bravery.

From delivering babies to talking people down from the ledge of despair, he has been a guardian angel in eMalahleni.

As eMalahleni sleeps soundly, Johann stands watch, a silent sentinel protecting our city from the shadows. His story is a reminder that heroes walk among us, their hearts afire with a desire to serve and protect.
