Criminals are hard at work this September with ongoing armed robberies in the City of Coal.
A local farm recently fell prey to an armed robbery. According to police reports, on Wednesday, September 4, at around 17:00, a complainant alleged that he was ambushed by a suspect who appeared from a gold-coloured vehicle. The suspect, clothed in a dark jacket and trousers, allegedly pointed a weapon and demanded the complainant’s phone, which he swiftly handed over due to fear for his safety. The suspect then fled the scene, leaving the complainant and his co-worker in a panic.
In another incident, a daring armed robbery attempt was thwarted when two suspects were caught and arrested by members of the community.
According to the police reports, on Saturday, September 14, the incident occurred on the street near a local liquor shop, where the complainant was walking with a blue plastic bag. Suddenly, two suspects allegedly approached him, brandished a firearm, and threatened him. The suspects then proceeded to rob the complainant of his belongings.
However, their gateway was short-lived because community members swiftly arrested them. The accused is now in custody.
The police are praising the community members’ quick response and bravery in making the arrest.
The incident underlines the significance of community vigilance and cooperation in combating crime.
Captain Eddie Hall from Witbank Police gave these tips: “Avoid being alone in a vehicle when traveling at night. Do not stop around hijacking spots or in any secluded area. Always be alert when driving. If you suspect you are being followed by a suspicious vehicle, drive to the nearest police station or call the SAPS Emergency Number 10111. Avoid distractions such as being on your phone, drinking, and driving. Increase caution at intersections; always keep a look-out for people loitering around your car or for any sudden activity around your car.”
