eMalahleni couple bound, gagged, and kidnapped following house robbery

"Large dogs serve as a deterrent; at least one dog should be trained to sleep inside the house,” police advise.

House robberies have become an unsettling norm in eMalahleni.

According to the police reports, three men, one of which was allegedly armed, stormed into a home around 21:00 on Friday, October 25.

The victim alleged when he came home, the men forced him into the house where his wife was sitting, searched them, and took their belongings, cash, and PINs, transferring cash from the victim’s account. In a harrowing twist, the couple was allegedly bound, gagged, and stuffed into their car’s trunk.

The men allegedly drove to Kromdraai, abandoned the couple, and fled with their loot.

Sergeant David Ratau from Witbank Police Station provided safety tips, “Ensure that your gates are locked at all times and that the keys cannot be easily reached or left lying around. Security gates with sturdy locks in front of each outer door, as well as burglar-proofing on all windows, are recommended. An alarm system, preferably connected to an armed response company, can be an effective deterrent. A few panic buttons in different rooms of the house should be installed. An alarm must also be capable of warning the occupants of any intrusion. Large dogs serve as a deterrent; at least one dog should be trained to sleep inside the house.”

This is still an ongoing case, and police are investigating.
