Young couple’s afternoon stroll leaves them phoneless

As the festive season approaches Witbank police urges the eMalahleni community to remain vigilant as criminals will be busy.

A disturbing trend of armed robberies has left residents on high alert. The latest incidents have raised concerns about the escalating use of firearms in robberies, putting innocent lives at risk.

According to  police, a complainant alleged that on Sunday, December 1, at approximately 01:00, she and her boyfriend were walking and talking when three men approached them.

One of the men allegedly pointed a firearm at the couple, demanding that they hand over their cellphones. They made off with the victim’s cellphones and cash from the boyfriend.

But, unfortunately for the alleged robbers, the victims knew them and they were arrested soon afterward.

Just two days later on Tuesday, December 3, at around 10:00, the same victim fell prey to another armed robbery. She received a request to meet someone at a local shop at Reyno Ridge.

Upon arrival an unknown man jumped into the car, allegedly pointing a firearm at the her. Her watch and cellphone were stolen.

Captain Eddie Hall, spokesperson from the Witbank Police, said, “the community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.”
