‘Mani’ curing emergencies

Meet Annemarie Bouwer, the guardian angel of eMalahleni, who’s been saving lives and soothing souls for six years.

In the heart of eMalahleni, a city often plagued by crime and chaos, one woman stands tall as a beacon of hope. For six years, Anne-Marie Bouwer has been the calm and collected voice of reason, guiding residents through the darkest of times. Her trusty catchphrase, “Stuur vir my”, is music to the ears of those in distress.

Born and bred in eMalahleni, Annemarie’s connection to the community runs deep. When the SACCW channel on Zello launched, she sprang into action, volunteering her services as a controller. By day, she’s a skilled nail technician, but by night and every moment in between, she’s a guardian angel, ready to tackle any emergency that comes her way.

With her phone always at the ready, Annemarie fields calls with precision and compassion, mobilising emergency services with lightning speed. From snake invasions to life-threatening crises, she’s the steady hand that guides her community through the storm.

But Annemarie’s heroism comes at a personal cost. She receives no payment for her services, driven solely by her sense of duty and love for the people of eMalahleni. “Crime has always fascinated me,” she says, “but it’s the people that make it all worth it. I do what I do with love, even when it drives me crazy.”

One memorable call still brings a smile to her face – a frantic family fearing the worst after a loved one’s suspected overdose. But when emergency services arrived, the ‘victim’ was ready to make a quick exit from his family’s nagging.

Annemarie’s experience as a student reservist prepared her for the trauma that comes with her role. “You have to be hard as nails, but compassionate too,” she says. “They need you to be strong, to hold it together.”

And that’s exactly what Annemarie does, with a beautiful smile on her face and a heart of gold. She’s the unsung hero of eMalahleni, a true emergency angel who deserves our gratitude and admiration.
