Thanduxolo receives 8 new classrooms

A major infrastructure boost arrives to enhance facilities for learners with intellectual disabilities.

Learners living with disabilities at Thanduxolo Special School have a safer learning environment following the donation of eight modular classrooms by Anglo Inyosi Coal Community Trust (AICCT).

On September 11, local stakeholders, Department of Education officials, principals from schools in the eMalahleni 1 circuit and community members gathered for the handover of the units.

“We were blessed that AICCT has donated classrooms to the school so that it can accommodate learners with profound intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder,” said school principal Pule Molebale.

Each of the eight modular units comes with a classroom, playroom, bathroom, sick bay and a storeroom.

Molebale explained that there was a great need for the additional classrooms since the school is growing and they have been admitting a lot of learners living with different disabilities.

“This is the only special school that accommodates learners with severe intellectual disabilities and other disabilities, so we have to admit learners from different mainstream schools within the Emalahleni area, Middelburg and other surrounding areas,” he said.

Molebale expressed his gratitude to the donors, stating that the contribution demonstrated their commitment to the well-being of the learners.

“I wish, in the near future, you could donate more because we have a lot of learners seeking admission in Thanduxolo,” he added.

Investment in dignity and inclusion

“This was more than just a handover of buildings; it is an investment in dignity, opportunity and inclusion,” said Nomfundo Cebekhulu from the trust.

“These classrooms are not only going to create a safer and more supportive environment for the learners, but they are going to enable them to reach their potential.”
