Water Crisis: Emalahleni Municipality provides an update on current situation

Emalahleni Water Crisis: Reservoirs critically low, rationing plans underway

The Emalahleni Local Municipality has acknowledged the ongoing water supply challenges and provided clarity on the current situation and the steps being taken to address it.
According to the municipality, the water levels across the reservoirs remain critically low, affecting the overall ability to pump and distribute water effectively.

The system is struggling to meet the high demand, resulting in interruptions in supply across various areas.

The municipality has provided a breakdown of the reservoir status:
– Point A – 0%
There is currently no pumping to Point A due to the low water levels at the command reservoir. Until levels improve, all areas supplied by Point A will be without water.

– Point B – 13%
The demand at Point B exceeds the supply, leading to difficulties in distributing water equitably. Far areas fed by Point B are experiencing interruptions in supply.

– Point C – 13%
While areas fed by the low-level pump have water, the high-level pump cannot operate at this level. Water supply to high-level areas will resume once levels exceed 20%.
Currently, there is no pumping from Point B to Point C due to the low levels at both reservoirs.

– Point D (Command Reservoir) – 39%
As the main reservoir supplying all other points, 39% is insufficient to stabilise the system. Efforts are underway to improve levels and balance distribution.

– Point E – 30%
Pumping to high-level areas is in progress but remains challenging due to limited supply.

– Point S
Point S will soon start pumping to Point C, which will improve areas supplied by Point C. This intervention is part of our efforts to stabilise the system and restore supply to affected areas.

To address the crisis, the municipality is prioritising the stabilisation of water levels at key reservoirs and will implement a rationing schedule once one reservoir reaches stable levels. Teams are also working to manage the system to ensure water reaches as many areas as possible.

The municipality has apologised for the inconvenience caused and urged all residents to use water sparingly and responsibly during this time.
