The municipality searched a trailer from where fish and seafood were sold and found it unfit for human consumption.
A trailer with seafood and fish was confiscated yesterday after complaints that the delicatessens might be spoiled.
Emalahleni Local Municipality, in collaboration with law enforcement, and Ward 20 Clr Maureen Scheepers, launched a crackdown on the hawkers selling seafood and fish on February 18.
The hawkers, who claim the seafood and fish, come from the Cape attempted to flee the scene but were quickly captured by the police and the SACCW.
All 22 hawkers were arrested.
Upon further inspection, officials discovered that the fish being sold by the hawkers posed a significant health risk due to its poor condition. The fish was confiscated, and the hawkers were fined for trading without permits.
Scheepers emphasised the importance of enforcing by-laws and maintaining public health standards. “The sale of live meat and fish by unlicensed vendors poses a significant risk to public health and safety. We urge residents not to purchase from these vendors, as the quality of these products is questionable.”
