Conlog and municipality passing the buck about not-so-smart meter issues in eMalahleni

The municipality opted to reconvene on Monday to discuss the smart meter issue with the National Treasury and give a final word on March 19.

Tempers flared at the meeting held this morning with stakeholders to discuss the smart meter issues residents are facing.

The meeting that was scheduled for 10:00 started well after 11:00.

A presentation was given on technical glitches experienced with the newly installed Conlog meters.

Desigan Govender from Conlog explained that the meters allow for remote metering.

He added it has tamper detection capabilities, ensures accurate billing and prevents revenue loss.

This explanation was not welcomed by the residents, who wanted to know why the meters gobble up units, why residents have to walk to the kiosks to load units, and why these meters were implemented in the wards with an above-average payment rate as opposed to wards with payment rates lower than 10%.

The municipality could not answer the questions posted by disgruntled residents.

Residents voiced their anger and frustrations and demanded that the meters be removed.
