Mpumalanga Economic Regulator urges responsible behaviour during Easter holidays

Mpumalanga Economic Regulator urges caution during Easter holiday

As we prepare for the Easter break, the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER) is calling on citizens to celebrate responsibly and avoid decisions that could lead to irreversible harm. Excessive alcohol consumption and irresponsible gambling pose serious threats to public health, safety, and financial well-being.

“Easter is a time for reflection and togetherness, not tragedy,” says MER CEO, Vusi Mtsweni. “We are urging all members of the public to make informed choices and resist behaviors that put lives and livelihoods at risk.”

The MER highlights the risks associated with alcohol abuse, which is linked to 75% of homicides, 60% of traffic accidents, and nearly half of all unnatural deaths in South Africa.

“Alcohol is the third leading cause of death and disability in South Africa,” added Mtsweni. “Its impact goes beyond the individual, touching families, communities, and the entire healthcare system.”

The regulator also warns against the dangers of gambling addiction, which can lead to financial ruin and emotional distress.

“Gambling addiction is real, and it ruins lives,” said Mtsweni. “We encourage responsible play, and we’re here to support those who may be struggling.”

The MER reminds the public that help is available for those struggling with alcohol or gambling addictions.
