Man’s appointment with Facebook prophet ends in famed Olifants River robbery

The Facebook prophet asked the man if his vehicle could handle the rough terrain at the river after the recent rains.

The Olifants River robberies are tallying up.

Up to date, six incidents have been reported to Witbank SAPS.

The robberies take place at the Olifants River when people practise religious activities.

The latest incident happened on April 27, when a man desperate for help landed in an unfortunate experience involving a Facebook prophet, costing him his car and money.

The man told police that he had an appointment with a prophet he found on Facebook in which they agreed to meet at a local filling station.

Before their meeting, the man alleged that the prophet had asked him if he owned a van so that they could use it to drive through the muddy roads heading to the Olifants River.

Upon arrival at the river, the victim said they were attacked by two men who allegedly pointed them with firearms, tied them up, and blindfolded them.

The robbers allegedly put them in the car boot and drove off with them in his SUV Toyota Fortuner, only to dump them at unknown bushes where they demanded their phones and transferred money from his account.

The robbers allegedly fled with the man’s car, leaving them stranded in the bushes.

Captain Eddie Hall, spokesperson for the Witbank Police Station warns the public against trusting strangers met on social media to avoid becoming victims to traps.

Be careful of the bogus prophet who we suspect is an accomplice in this case,” he said.
