Ga-Nala protest continues, roads closed

Ga-Nala protest continues, with protesters closing roads as fast as police can open them.

A protest that began at midnight in Ga-Nala, comprising Thubelihle and Rietspruit under the Emalahleni Local Municipality, continues.

Residents demand job opportunities from local industries, particularly Eskom and nearby mining companies, citing the companies’ proximity to the community as a reason for prioritising local hiring.

The protesters claim to have repeatedly engaged with these companies without receiving a meaningful response, leading to significant economic hardship and exacerbating poverty and inequality in the area.

A protest that began at midnight in Ga-Nala, comprising Thubelihle and Rietspruit under the Emalahleni Local Municipality, continues.

Community members believe local employment opportunities would boost the local economy and foster a more positive relationship between the community and operating companies.

Constable Angel Makubu, Kriel Police Station Spokesperson, reports that protesters are destructive and unapproachable, having barricaded roads.

When police attempt to open one road, protesters close another. Motorists are advised to avoid the area as roads R544, R545, and R547 around Ga-Nala, New Clydesdale, and behind Matla.
