Witbank SAPS officer dies in tragic weekend accident

Four patients were taken to nearby hospitals after the crash between Amsterdam and Piet Retief.

A policeman from Witbank SAPS died in an accident over the weekend.

The accident happened on June 20 at around 21:40 between Piet Retief and Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Police rushed to the scene when the accident was reported and found Constable Innocent Muzi Malaza from the Witbank Crime Prevention Unit still trapped in his car. He was declared dead on the scene.

The three passengers in the car with him and the driver of the other vehicle were taken to a hospital in Piet Retief.

An eyewitness, Fango Mthukuzi, a truck driver, told police that the two vehicles, a Polo driven by Malaza and a Ford Ranger bakkie, were on their way in the direction of Piet Retief.

He said the bakkie was behind the Polo, and the driver of the Polo turned right onto a gravel road, apparently without using his indicator.

Mthukuzi claims that the bakkie hit the Polo and pushed it in front of the truck he was driving, and they collided.

Captain Eddie Hall, police spokesperson, said Malaza would have been at Witbank SAPS a year next month.

“As we mourn the loss of a dedicated officer, our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. We are saddened, and we pray for the Malaza family,” Hall said.
