Three months of complaining and reporting, and still no action

Themba Khoza, spokesperson from the provincial Department of Water and Sanitation urged the municipality to save water by attending to water leaks in time.

A resident has raised serious concerns about a deteriorating municipal water pipe in the Penny Whistle Estate area, warning that the situation may soon escalate into a full-scale water crisis.

According to one of the residents, the first report of the leak was submitted in March. Since then, the pipe, located on Gordon Road at the entrance shared by Penny Whistle Estate, Classical Heights, and Gordon Village, has remained in a worsening condition. The pipe, which serves as the main supply line from the council to both estates, shows extensive signs of rust and is reportedly leaking heavily.

What makes the situation more precarious is the absence of a valve before the residential meters. This design flaw means that in the event of a burst, there’s currently no way to isolate Classical Heights from Gordon Village. As it stands, any emergency shutdown would affect the entire area, leaving all residents without water access. Should the pipe burst, as experts fear it might, it could lead to widespread water outages, property damage, and high repair costs.

“The department also urges communities to act responsibly and take proactive steps to reduce water consumption and water losses. Water security for the current and future generations depends on our responsible use of the available water and water resources,” said Themba Khoza, spokesperson from the provincial Department of Water and Sanitation.

However, the problem regarding water scarcity continues, as this was reported three months ago, and still no change.

“I am aware of the leak, and it was first reported to me on March 31. I follow up every Monday, but I’m ignored each time. It’s now three months later. Over the past week, the leak has only gotten worse, and I am now reporting it daily, but still no feedback,” said Ward Councillor Maureen Scheepers.
