MEC Macie urges drivers to obey rules and keep children safe ahead of a busy weekend on Mpumalanga road

As traffic volumes are expected to rise this weekend, MEC Jackie Macie urges all road users to prioritise safety and obey traffic rules to avoid deadly crashes, especially involving children.

As South Africa prepares for the reopening of schools and a major rugby showdown between the Springboks and Georgia in Mbombela this Saturday, Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, has issued a strong plea to motorists: protect children by obeying the rules of the road.

“The safe arrival at intended destinations by various road users is in the hands of drivers. This means every driver must be cautious and always obey the rules. Roads are shared spaces, and we must tolerate and be patient with one another.”

Both the reopening of schools for the third term and the rugby match are expected to contribute to increased traffic volumes across the province this weekend.

Macie emphasised that reckless driving behaviours, including speeding, unsafe overtaking, and driving under the influence, have historically been leading causes of deadly crashes during high-traffic periods.

The MEC urged motorists undertaking long-distance trips to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, avoid hitchhikers, and stick to using legitimate public transport. He also warned of hazardous winter road conditions, including black ice and frost due to veld fires and snowfall in certain areas.

Law enforcement agencies from both the province and the City of Mbombela Local Municipality will be deployed in full force to manage traffic and ensure the safety of thousands traveling to and from Mbombela Stadium.

Supporters heading to the match are also urged to behave responsibly and cooperate fully with security personnel.
