Gold worth R1m discovered in eMalahleni

The two suspects allegedly tried to bribe police with R15 000.

SAPS arrested two people last night when gold-bearing material weighing 74kg was discovered.

Police intercepted the vehicle just after 18:00 at the Puma Garage.

A 35-year-old man from Zimbabwe and a 19-year-old South African woman were arrested.

The pair allegedly attempted to bribe the police with R15 000.

In addition to being charged with possession of suspected stolen property, the suspects also now face a charge of bribery.

Both are expected to appear in the Witbank Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The acting Station Commander of Witbank SAPS, Colonel One Thobejane, has commended the swift response by members of the Middelburg Flying Squad.

He emphasised that criminal activities, including attempts to corrupt law enforcement, will not be tolerated.
