Ward 23 residents submit memorandum to address residential concerns

Residents are now turning to the municipality for answers after the recent demolition of their homes.

Residents of Ward 23 in Kwa-Guqa extensions visited the Emalahleni Local Municipality yesterday to submit their memorandum regarding residential concerns.

The residents claim that the municipality promised to allocate land to them where they could build and reside, but years have passed, and they are constantly being told about protocols.

“We have been looking for a space to build for years, but when we eventually find it, our shacks are being demolished and we are being beaten, shot, and chased after, as they claim that there are people on a list who are supposed to occupy the same land,” the residents said.

They added that the brutal shooting incident carried out allegedly by the law enforcement on August 6 resulted in a number of injuries and property damage.

Among their list of recommendations that they said require the municipality’s urgent intervention, the residents included:

1. Investigation: A thorough investigation into the incident should be conducted to identify those responsible for the violence and illegal activities. Legal action should be taken against all perpetrators.

2. Land dispute resolution: The municipality should expedite the resolution of the land dispute through established legal channels. This may involve working with relevant authorities, stakeholders, and community leaders to find a peaceful and lawful solution.

3. Community engagement: Engaging with the community to understand their grievances and working towards addressing them through dialogue and policy implementation can help prevent future incidents.

4. Support for victims: Provision of support to those affected by the violence, including medical care, counselling, and compensation for damages, is crucial.
