TVET Month launch opens learners’ eyes in eMalahleni
Learners are now well aware of how to apply at learning institutions.
The Department of Higher Education, in partnership with Nkangala TVET College, officially launched TVET Month with a successful event that filled the Emalahleni Civic Theatre with excitement, opportunity, and hope.
Held on August 5, the gathering welcomed learners from across the region, including learners from Philip Ndimande Secondary School, Witbank High School, and Coronation Secondary School – all eager to learn how Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) could unlock their potential.
The main goal of the launch was to help learners better understand what TVET colleges offer. Through engaging presentations and useful sessions, students gained insight into the application process for enrolling at TVET colleges, funding opportunities, including bursaries and NSFAS support, and the wide range of courses available at the 50 TVET colleges across South Africa.
Learners walked away with not just pamphlets and contact numbers; they left with real knowledge and guidance on how to take the next step in their education journey. Through participation in various Q&A activities, others walked away with gift packs from various stakeholders.
“The aim of this launch is to raise awareness about a lot of opportunities that we have in TVET, and we want to clear the rumour roaming around about TVET qualifications,” said the principal of Nkangala TVET College, Cain Maimela.
According to learners, one of the most powerful parts of the event was hearing from former students of Nkangala TVET College. These speakers didn’t just give speeches; they offered living proof that success is possible. They spoke honestly about their journeys, challenges, and victories.
Mpho Chartfield, a former Nkangala TVET College student, said, “Your journey won’t always be smooth, but you can become something just from TVET.”

The speaker emphasised that TVET is not just a second choice – it’s the smart choice for those who want skills that lead directly to careers.
The launch event wasn’t only about Nkangala TVET; it was a moment to honour the incredible work being done at all 50 TVET colleges across the country.
Learners explored interactive booths, met mentors, and asked questions about different career paths.

The Nkangala TVET College Choir made the atmosphere electric at the launch.
