Emalahleni City Marathon special medal celebrates eMalahleni’s coal mining legacy

Runners who will break the set record will be awarded a special medal.

The Emalahleni City Marathon 2025 is just around the corner, with a race T-shirt and socks set, as well as a special medal up for grabs for the winners who break the set record.

The Emalahleni City Marathon Club will host its highly anticipated annual marathon on September 20 at Witbank High School, offering a range of unforgettable experiences for runners of all levels.

To celebrate the city’s rich mining heritage, the club has designed a special medal coated in an anthracite colour for those who will finish the 21.1km half-marathon in under two hours or the 42.2km full marathon in under four hours.

“Anthracite coal is the highest grade of coal in the world and is vastly mined in eMalahleni, so with the special medal, we embrace our city’s name, which means a place rich in coal,” said Morris Mdluli, secretary general of the club.

Morris encourages people and organisations to make sure that they become a part of the prestigious event.

“This is a community event and everyone is welcome,” he said, explaining that all age groups are accommodated.

Online entries are still open and will close on September 14, and Morris added that they will still accept manual entries on September 19 and on the day of the race from 4:00 in the morning.
