GEPF strengthens member engagement with service delivery campaign

Known as GEPF Day, the event brought together over 690 members and beneficiaries, underscoring the fund’s commitment to bringing pension services directly to the communities it serves.

The Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) hosted its seventh service delivery campaign of the financial year at the Emalahleni Civic Centre on Saturday.

The event was held on August 23. The outreach followed a targeted stakeholder engagement session with Community Development Workers (CDWs) from the Emalahleni Local Municipality. During this session, CDWs were briefed on GEPF benefits and administrative processes and were requested to assist in mobilizing members across their respective wards. They were also encouraged to help find individuals who have not claimed their benefits for two or more years, a critical step in addressing the growing number of unclaimed benefit cases.

The campaign aimed to educate members about their pension benefits, guide those aged 55 to 65 through pre-retirement procedures, and encourage continued membership until retirement. On-site service stalls provided immediate assistance with pension-related queries, ensuring that members received timely and accurate support.

Percy Hlatshwayo, Client Liaison Officer from the Mpumalanga Regional Office, briefed the attendees on the Two-Pot System.

A key focus of the event was raising awareness about pension fraud.

“We cautioned attendees against individuals posing as fund representatives who offer to expedite benefit claims for a fee. The fund reiterated that all GEPF services are provided free of charge and urged members to remain vigilant,” said Rakgwatha Mokou, Deputy Director of External Communications in GEPF.

Members of the community came in numbers.

Established in May 1996, GEPF is Africa’s largest pension fund. It serves over 1.2 million active members and more than 470 000 pensioners and beneficiaries, with assets exceeding R2.3 trillion. Governed by the Government Employees Pension Law, the fund is responsible for managing and administering pensions and related benefits for South African government employees.
