With temperatures expected to soar across eMalahleni this week, the SPCA is urging dog owners to take extra precautions to protect their pets from heat-related risks.

According to the Witbank SPCA while sunny days may seem perfect for outdoor fun, they can pose serious dangers to dogs, especially those with thick coats, flat faces, or underlying health conditions.

The SPCA has shared a set of guidelines to help pet owners keep their furry companions safe and comfortable.
Here are some tips to keep your dog safe from the harsh summer weather approaching:

• Never leave your pets in the car
• Watch out for heatstroke which commonly happens when they are exercising in hot weather
• Ensure there is always lots of water and keep the water in a shady spot
• Ensure your pets have proper shelter in a cool shady area if they are left outside but preferably also let them have access indoors
• Avoid hot pavements as it can burn their paws
• If your dog loves water, a kiddie’s swimming-pool would be a great way for them to cool themselves down
• Ensure your pets is properly groomed for the hot weather

The SPCA reminds all pet owners, “Your dog’s safety starts with awareness. A few simple steps can prevent tragedy and ensure your pet enjoys the sunshine safely.”
