Woman allegedly raped as she waited for Bolt ride on the N4

The police urge people to stop hitchhiking and avoid travelling at night.

A woman’s night travel landed her in a stranded situation that ended with her allegedly being raped.

According to the police, a woman said that on September 15, before 22:00, she had just been dropped off by a taxi from Mozambique on the N4 and N12 split freeway when she was suddenly ushered into a traumatic experience.

As she waited for her Bolt ride, the woman said a man came out of nowhere and dragged her to the bushes, where he allegedly raped her.

After the horrible ordeal, she managed to get help and called the police, who came and picked her up.

Spokesperson for the Witbank SAPS, Captain Eddie Hall, advised people against hitchhiking at night.

“Always use public transport and avoid travelling at night. If you accidentally find yourself travelling at night, always make sure to get off in safe spaces like well-lighted areas, away from alleys, bushes, and entryways,” he said.
