Mayor opens boys’ camp to shape future leaders

During the launch, Jabulile Khubeka, secretary of LDAC, emphasised the need to protect and support the youth.

The Mayor of Emalahleni, Clr Vusi Nhlapho, officially launched the Boys’ Camp, a programme established to guide young boys toward becoming strong and responsible leaders.

The official launch was held on September 18 at Witbank Dam.

Organised by the Emalahleni Local Municipality’s Youth Desk, along with several stakeholders, the camp featured boys from schools across the region. The aim was to help young minds grow in character, confidence, and a sense of care for their communities.

The first day of the camp was packed with talks.

Sergeant David Ratau from the Witbank SAPS spoke about the struggles many young people face and emphasised the importance of making good choices.

“We receive different assault cases from various schools across the city, so boys should learn to never be on the wrong side of the law now at an early age because it will ruin a lot for them in the future,” said David.

Hezekiel Mabena, also known as ‘Pondoza the Builder,’ a well-known author from eMalahleni, shared his story of pushing through hard times with vision and strength.

The mayor shared a heart-touching speech with the boys. He spoke from his own experience, sharing his personal journey and the challenges he had overcome growing up.

“No matter where you come from, with self-belief, discipline, and determination, you can rise above your situation,” said Vusi.

The second day of the camp came with a successful hiking session for the boys and the mayor. Hiking was a key part of the programme, not just for fun, but to teach discipline, resilience, and teamwork. It helped the boys build endurance, stay focused, and support each other as they grew.

Vusi said, “Discipline is the cornerstone of success. Hiking teaches us that every step forward requires patience, determination, and a focused mindset. These are the same qualities that will help our young people navigate life’s challenges.”

“The Boys Camp is an investment in the future of Emalahleni. By mentoring and guiding our boys, we are shaping responsible citizens and nurturing future leaders who will make a positive impact in our communities,” Vusi added.
