SPCA sounds alarm on cat poisonings
The escalating number of poisonings is particularly devastating for the SPCA volunteer network that is already stretched thin.
Poisoning of cats is increasing at an alarming rate.
Carike van Rooyen from the SPCA said it is heartbreaking each time another dead cat is reported.
“The use of poison to kill animals is an act of cruelty, and any person caught doing so will be charged with animal cruelty. The suffering an animal endures is immense and horrific,” she said. “If a feral cat is causing a nuisance, please do not resort to poisoning. Instead, reach out to a local feral caregiver or the SPCA for advice and assistance. Together, we can find a humane solution.”
Van Rooyen added that feral cat populations are a growing concern because unsterilised cats are being abandoned.
She said there are a handful of dedicated volunteers working tirelessly to address this issue by feeding and sterilising these cats, but they are struggling to keep up with the rising numbers.
“This work is done at their own expense and is very costly.”
They have regular fundraisers, and the SPCA will keep residents updated as to when another fundraiser is happening.
Van Rooyen said a healthy feral colony can be kept if the ferals are sterilised and they are fed a few times a week.
“But, they have to be allowed to hunt and keep their instincts, not to totally rely on humans only,” Van Rooyen ended.
