Witbank High soccer stars join SA U15 training camp

Eight athletes from Mpumalanga have received national call-ups to attend the U15 boys' and girls' training camps.

A total of eight pupils from Mpumalanga have received national call-ups to attend the U15 boys’ and girls’ training camps.

The camps took place in Johannesburg at Fun Valley from October 2 to 5.

The Mpumalanga contingent included Ompholositse Mpanza, Mnqobi Masilela, and Kenny Zolani from Witbank High.

The players caught the attention of national selectors at the Winter School Sports Championships in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, earlier this year.

Team Mpumalanga lost in the finals in both the girls and boys divisions, but won the individual awards with Nkosingiphile Mthombeni from St Mark and Zolani were named players of the tournament.

“We’re happy for the players on their national team call-ups and wish them well going forward. We also extend our appreciation to the school coaches who have worked tirelessly with the players, as well as to government officials for the role they’ve played in this process,” says Culture, Sport and Recreation MEC, Leah Mabuza.

The national U15 teams will represent South Africa at the Council of Southern Africa Football Association Qualifiers, set to take place in Stellenbosch from December  5 to 7 for a spot in the CAF African Schools Football Championships.
