Fight back against carjacking with Sergeant Ratau’s tips

As carjackings rise in eMalahleni, Sergeant Ratau shares essential safety tips to help you and your family stay safe this festive season.

As the festive season draws near, police are warning motorists to be extra cautious following an increase in carjacking incidents in the area.

According to Sergeant David Ratau, community members can take practical steps to protect themselves and their loved ones from becoming victims.

“Carjackings often occur when people least expect it, especially during the busy holiday period,” said Ratau. “Being alert, prepared, and proactive can make all the difference.”

Motorists are advised to ensure their vehicles are in good working condition and to keep fuel tanks filled before any trip. Always lock doors, close windows, and avoid stopping in isolated areas.

When parking, choose well-lit and secure locations. If approached by a stranger, open your window no more than 5cm to speak. Should you feel unsafe or notice suspicious behaviour, drive away immediately and avoid confrontation.

Sergeant Ratau further advises motorists to limit night travel, vary daily routes, and be cautious of staged minor accidents, which may be used as traps.

“If you’re bumped from behind and don’t feel safe, drive straight to the nearest police station,” he added. Most importantly, never resist an armed attacker. “Your life is more valuable than your car or possessions,” Ratau emphasised. “Comply calmly and move to a safe distance as soon as possible.”

Residents are also encouraged to use gear locks, check surroundings before entering driveways, and keep garage doors closed until gates are secured.

Police urge the public to report any suspicious activity immediately to their nearest police station, via the Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or through the MySAPS App.

All information will be treated confidentially.
