Frustration mounts in Klarinet as illegal dumping continues

The municipality warns the public against improper disposal of waste as they could face fines or other legal action if caught.

Klarinet Extension 6 residents continue to dump waste illegally shortly after the municipality cleaned the area up.

Matau Muthelo, a concerned resident located not far from an illegal dumping site at Hamerkop Street, confirmed that municipal workers visited the area a few weeks back to clean.

“They came to clean two weeks back, but left some huge dirt,” she said.

Though the municipality tried to improve the area, which had started bringing up an awful smell and narrowing the road, the residents complained that people are still dumping their waste there.

Muthelo had previously cried out about the site, complaining that it had been a persistent problem for years, because whenever the municipality cleans up, people dump again.

The resident said she has again reported the matter to the municipality to find a solution about how they could keep the area clean and avoid people dumping illegally, and they promised to look into the matter.

The municipality warns the public against improper disposal of waste, as they say they often run awareness campaigns educating about the importance of proper waste disposal.

“We urge communities to utilize designated waste disposal sites and participate in recycling programmes. Anyone caught illegally dumping waste can face fines or other legal action as the municipal law enforcement authorities will be forced to take action,” said Lebo Mofokeng, the municipal spokesperson.

“Residents are encouraged to report illegal dumping activities in their neighborhoods,” he added.
