Brace yourself for 48-hour water shutdown

A 48-hour water shutdown is starting tomorrow to allow critical maintenance on an external water supply scheme and the water treatment plant.

The Emalahleni Local Municipality has issued a formal notice to residents regarding a 48-hour planned water shutdown.

One of the municipality’s external water supply schemes – which includes mine reclamation and package plants – will be taken offline from Thursday to Friday.

This 48-hour window is necessary to allow for critical maintenance and improvement work that can only be safely conducted while the plant is offline.

These works are essential to maintain water quality standards, ensure operational safety, and support the long-term reliability and regulatory compliance of the water supply system.

The Witbank Water Treatment Plant is currently experiencing operational challenges related to malfunctioning valves and actuators at the filtration units.

These failures have impacted production capacity, resulting in a reduction of approximately 20Ml per day.

The municipality confirmed that technical teams are working around the clock to resolve the issue.

Most of the faulty actuators have already been replaced, and the plant is under continuous monitoring to stabilise the system and restore full production levels.

While these improvements are underway, residents in various sectors may experience low water pressure or intermittent supply.

To assist the community during this period, the municipality has committed to deploying water tankers to the most affected areas.
