Armed robberies are ‘loafing’ around in eMalahleni

Residents are urged to be vigilant, and motorists are cautioned to be careful about where they stop their cars.

Vosman SAPS is facing a mounting crisis as a series of violent robberies has left the community in a state of high alert over the past two weeks.

Armed robbery at Extension 12

The violence began on the evening of January 16 in Extension 12 when a man who got out of a taxi was confronted by an armed man.

The man demanded his travelling bag.

The victim told police the man became violent and struck him in the left eye with the butt of the firearm.

He reportedly continued assaulting him until he fell on the ground.

The attacker fled with the stolen bag.

Armed robbery on the Kwa-Guqa main road

Early on the morning of January 20, the focus shifted to the Kwa-Guqa main road, where it is said that a woman waiting for transport was approached by two armed men.

The woman told the police that the men demanded her cellphone, which she tried to protect by throwing it over the fence of a nearby house.

However, one of the men simply jumped the fence to get it, and they fled afterwards.

Armed robbery in Vosman

That same afternoon, a terrifying stabbing occurred in Vosman around 16:00.

According to the police, a man said he was walking with two friends and was approached by two men.

He told the police that the men threatened him and stabbed him on the left side of his chest with a knife, and took his cellphone and cash.

They thereafter fled the scene on foot.

Armed robbery in Extension 12

The crime spree intensified on January 23 with two major incidents.

According to the police, at 06:15 in Extension 12, a bread delivery crew was held up at gunpoint by three men near a local tuck shop.

The men reportedly robbed the workers of their cash and phones, but also stole six crates of bread before escaping.

Armed robbery on the N4

The night concluded with a tyre-spiking trap on the N4.

A motorist told the police that as he was traveling toward eMalahleni with his companion, they stopped to change a tyre.

Two men appeared from the darkness and threatened them with firearms.

The man said the robbers took all their belongings and forced them to transfer money to them.

When the two didn’t do the transfer, the robbers settled for the cash they found on them and their cellphones.

They fled the scene on foot.

Vosman SAPS is continuing with investigations into the cases.
SAPS advises residents in communities to always be crime-conscious and be aware of crime opportunities at all times.

“Never walk around alone, and don’t talk to strangers. Be on the lookout for strange cars or people,” SAPS stated, adding that people must walk in well-lit, busy streets and in a group, if possible.
