Witbank SAPS investigates double fraud – residents urged to prioritise vigilance when transacting

The SAPS has urged residents to block their cards as soon as they lose them to avoid such incidents.

The Witbank SAPS is investigating two cases of fraud after two people fell victim to separate incidents over the past week.

According to the police, on February 4, a man went to a local store to deposit money for building materials. Upon completion, he noticed that the amount reflected on the receipt was not the amount he should have in his account.

The man told the police that he went back to the cashier and asked her if there was no mistake made. After the cashier had went through the man’s previous statements, they noticed a transaction that was made from his account in Gauteng.

Explaining to the police, the man told them that the store’s investigations revealed that an item that was purchased online using his account was delivered at an address in Centurion, Gauteng.

A case of fraud was opened, and Witbank Police are currently investigating. However, no arrests have been made.
In the second incident, a man told the police that on January 31, he was at his home when he received a bank notification of a debit of an amount of money at a grocery store in eMalahleni.

The man told the police that he didn’t authorise or consent to the transaction.
Another case was opened, and no arrests have been made yet.

“We are urging the public to normalise by not tapping their cards twice or more than once when making transactions. If you tap your card once and they tell you that it didn’t go through, wait to verify as they might be obtaining your card ID as you tap repeatedly,” said the Witbank SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer David Ratau.

“If you lose your card, make sure you block it as soon as you can,” Ratau added.

Police investigations remain underway.
