AHF puts condoms back at the center of HIV prevention

AHF reinforced the ‘Just Use It’ message to Nkangala TVET College students in commemoration of International Condom Day.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) South Africa recently commemorated International Condom Day (ICD) with a vibrant event to promote condom usage since there is a rise in new HIV infections among youth.

Celebrated on February 13 at Nkangala TVET College Mpondozankomo Campus, the event, themed “Just Use It,” brought together students for a morning of fun, creativity, education, and condom distribution.

“International Condom Day reminds us that condoms are safer, sexy, and must be kept at the center of protecting sexual health worldwide,” AHF said.

Through the event, the organisation reinforced the message that protecting sexual health should be accessible, stigma-free, and empowering for everyone.

“The surge in sexually transmitted infections (STI) rates worldwide, particularly syphilis, is not a mystery – it is what happens when global funding diminishes, and condoms are not prioritised for prevention,” they said.

“Each condom used helps safeguard decades of progress in the global HIV response and avoids far more costly setbacks.”

The students participated in exciting activities such as a pledge board, condom demonstrations, STI and condom usage quizzes, and a DIY game mat with teaching messages on safe sex, STIs, and teenage pregnancy.

The event also featured officials from the Department of Social Development who educated the students about the dangers of drug abuse and shared information about rehabilitation centres in case they needed assistance with addiction.

“We are so grateful for the session because we got to learn even information that some of us didn’t have knowledge of,” one of the students said.
