He said the men pretended to ask for a lighter, only to pull out a firearm, blindfold, and tie them up thereafter.

The couple was guided towards the river.

Once there, they were ordered to sit down while the gunmen demanded their cellphones and access to their banking applications and withdrew an amount of over R20 000.

The robbers didn’t stop there, as they were busy with the couple, another man and woman reportedly arrived at the river and were immediately attacked.

They were also tied up and robbed of their phones.

The police are investigating the incident. No arrests have been made at this stage as the robbers remain at large.

Warrant Officer David Ratau from Witbank SAPS urged the community of eMalahleni to be extra vigilant, report suspicious activity immediately, and take precautionary measures when going to the river for rituals.

“We are intensifying patrols and intelligence-driven operations to target the perpetrators. We are also working closely with crime prevention partners and local communities to improve visibility and response times,” he said.
