Municipality warns public against illegal sale of RDP houses and municipal land

Residents warned about illegally selling RDP houses and municipal land.

The Emalahleni Local Municipality has issued a strong warning to residents about individuals illegally selling RDP houses and municipal land, especially in the Siyanqoba area.

The municipality cautioned members of the public not to engage in any private transactions involving government-subsidised houses or municipal stands. Officials stressed that the sale or purchase of RDP houses through private individuals is unlawful and can lead to serious legal consequences.

According to the municipality, RDP houses are allocated strictly through approved government processes and through the official housing database. Any person claiming they can sell or secure an RDP house outside these channels is likely involved in fraudulent activity.

The municipality also reminded residents that the unlawful occupation of municipal land, commonly referred to as ‘land invasion, is a criminal offense.

The illegal selling of municipal stands is also prohibited under the Municipal Management and Control of Informal Settlements and Land Invasion Bylaw. Residents are urged not to pay money to anyone claiming they can assist them in acquiring an RDP house or municipal stand.
